Second voyage
Before he left Spain on his second voyage, Columbus had been directed by Ferdinand and Isabella to maintain friendly, even loving, relations with the indigenous people, the natives. He set sail on September 24, 1493.[33]
The fleet for the second voyage was much larger: two naos and 15 caravels. The two naos were the flagship Marigalante[34] and the Gallega; the caravels were theFraila,[35] San Juan, Colina,[36] Gallarda,[37] Gutierre,[38] Bonial,[39] Rodriga,[40]Triana,[41] Vieja,[42] Prieta,[43] Gorda,[44] Cardera,[45] and Quintera.[46] The Niñareturned for this expedition, which also included a ship named Pinta probably identical to that from the first expedition. In addition, the expedition saw the construction of the first ship in the Americas, the Santa Cruz or India.[47]
